Black Hills Energy begins seasonal electric pole inspections to support safety and reliability
PUEBLO, Colo., April 8, 2026 – Black Hills Energy is conducting its annual electric wood pole inspections through September, including approximately 11,750 poles in Cañon City, Pueblo, and Rocky Ford. The work is part of a proactive inspection cycle designed to help keep the electric system safe, resilient, and reliable for customers.
“Every pole we inspect supports reliable service for our customers,” said Erik Anderson, general manager of electric operations. “By identifying issues early, treating poles to extend their service life and replacing equipment when needed, we’re delivering the dependable service our customers count on—especially during periods of high energy use and extreme weather.”
Wood remains a proven, durable, and cost-effective material for electric distribution infrastructure. However, it is naturally susceptible to weather, insects, and other impacts over time. Systematic inspections and timely treatments help extend pole life, prioritize replacements, and deliver long-term value for customers and communities. The inspections are a key component of the company’s ongoing investment in infrastructure to strengthen the electric grid, improve reliability, and reduce wildfire risk.
Black Hills Energy will utilize the third-party contractor Intec/Davey Resource Group to access poles located on or near customer property to complete inspections. Intec/Davey Resource Group crews carry photo identification, wear high visibility safety gear, and operate vehicles marked with their company name and this statement, “Contracting for Black Hills Energy.”
Black Hills Energy will notify impacted customers by email, when possible, ahead of inspection activity. Some inspections may require multiple visits, which could include underground utility locators (811), pole inspection crews and, in certain cases, a Black Hills Energy employee to complete follow-up work. Inspections may include visual assessments, testing, and limited excavation around the base of poles.
As part of this routine work, Black Hills Energy encourages customers to be mindful of crews and equipment and to allow space for work to be completed safely and efficiently. Our teams follow established safety practices to minimize impacts to neighbors and the surrounding area. If you notice a downed power line or damaged utility equipment, please keep a safe distance and call 911, then contact Black Hills Energy so we can respond promptly.
